BCCEC Delegation Participates in Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting 2024 in Samoa

Members of the Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers Confederation (BCCEC) recently led a delegation to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024, held from October 21-26 in Samoa. As the first CHOGM hosted in a Pacific Small Island Developing State, this gathering drew leaders, policymakers, and business experts from across the Commonwealth. The theme for CHOGM 2024 was ‘One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth’.

Representing the BCCEC were its CEO, Vice Chairman, Trade Manager, and chamber members from different industries. The group was actively involved in various forums and high-level discussions held in Apia, Samoa's capital. This year’s CHOGM was particularly focused on building economic resilience and strengthening collaborations among Commonwealth nations.

Leaders of Commonwealth countries meet every two years for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), hosted by different member countries on a rotating basis.

CHOGM 2024 Forums

Ahead of CHOGM, members of parliament, youth and gender activists, as well as representatives from society and business, met at special forums to ensure the voices of women, young people, businesses and other organisations were heard. The BCCEC delegation was able to participate in CHOGM’s key forums, representing the Bahamas while connecting with leaders from across the Commonwealth:

  • The People’s Forum: The People’s Forum is the single largest opportunity for people to engage with leaders on global development issues. The Forum is organised by the Commonwealth Foundation:

  • The Women’s Forum: The Commonwealth Women's Forum convenes delegates to highlight women’s political, economic and societal contributions and identify policies to advance gender equality and peace for all.

  • The Youth Forum: The Commonwealth Youth Forum provides an opportunity to address issues impacting young people and ensure they have a voice and agency in their future.

  • The Business Forum: The Commonwealth Business Forum convenes global experts from businesses and the private sector to recommend and champion solutions to global challenges.

An exhibition showcasing local innovations provided chamber members with firsthand exposure to sustainable practices, inspiring ideas for applying similar solutions locally.

Why Membership with Your Chamber Is Key

The BCCEC’s participation in CHOGM 2024 highlights the immense value Chambers of Commerce provide to their members. Being part of a Chamber not only grants access to global discussions like CHOGM but also fosters connections that can lead to tangible business opportunities, knowledge sharing, and policy influence. Through these high-level events, members gain insights and networking opportunities that help position their businesses for sustainable growth in an interconnected world.
