The Paint Place

Company name: The Paint Place

Person in charge: Christine King- Wallen General Manager

Year Company was founded: 25 November 1993

Describe what your business provides for its customers: The Paint Place is the sole distributor of Benjamin Moore and Richard’s Paints in The Bahamas, you will be able to find your favourite hues and inspiration in our colour selection. We also offer a wide variety of varnishes, wood treatments, industrial coatings, floor, pool, and traffic coatings as well as paint sundries. Coupled with premium quality products at competitive prices, customers can enjoy a welcoming atmosphere by a team with passion and impeccable customer service.

From concept through construction and completion, to the finishing touches of each of your projects, you can rely on the team to deliver a personal environment tailored specifically for you. By interpreting an individual client's style and needs, our paint expert sales associates can successfully incorporate function while following current design trends.

Give us a brief history of your business and what makes it unique: The Paint Place is exactly what its name suggests: a place where you go to buy paint. Upon further inspection, however, one finds that it’s a company that stands for so much more than priming walls and applying topcoats. We value people: our employees as well as our customers. It is all about relationships and servicing each customer according to their needs.

Started in 1993 by President Michael Maura, The Paint Place expanded nine years later, opening a store in Marsh Harbour, Abaco in 2002 and in 2008 a second location was opened in western New Providence in the Sandyport Plaza. Coming out of a well-established historical Maura family business of hardware, paint and building supplies, dating back to the 1950s, The Paint Place has kept family business principles and is now the leading paint company in the Bahamas. The Paint Place is unique in that there is no blueprint as to how to meet customers' needs. Long ago we have maintained that each customer is unique and will be serviced as such.

What’s the most exciting recent highlight for your business? The Paint Place celebrates our employees and their successes, milestones in family achievement. The success for the business recently was reopening the Marsh Harbour, Abaco store after it was completely destroyed by Hurricane Dorian.

With the Covid-19 pandemic striking just six months after Hurricane Dorian, this Abaco reopening was not a guarantee. Like so many other businesses, there were significant financial setbacks, however, The Paint Place had more than one reason to push to the finish line and reopen the Abaco store.

This rebounding of a Bahamian business at a time like this means something else: that hard work, unity and being our brothers’ keepers are all still relevant in business.

Where do you hope to see your business in 12 months? General Eric Shinseki, former Chief of Staff of the US Army, said, “If you don’t like change, you’re going to like irrelevance even less.” The Paint Place will always strive to grow and remain relevant to meet the needs of its customers. We have established a sense of urgency in building a leadership team, developing and sharing the vision and strategy, communicating that vision, empowering our team to remain on the cutting edge in business. I see us simply being better than who we are today.

What advice would you offer to someone starting their own small business? While you may provide a limited product or service offering, always consider your business a BIG business. Invest in your people and offer the best customer service. Develop a clientele that trusts your products and more importantly trust you, and always give back.

Stop into The Paint Place and get the perfect paint for your next project today.

What advice would you offer to someone starting their own small business? I would advise new entrepreneurs to use technology to give their new business the advantage over more seasoned and experienced operations. Ensure that you use an accounting app whether desktop, mobile or cloud-based. Good financial management of your cash flow is key to the success of your business. Find a source to get good business advice, whether online, the Chamber of Commerce or Small Business Development Centre. Execute your business plan and ensure that your business is customer-centric, and if your customers are happy you will be successful.
