News Report: Chamber of commerce to launch Chamber institute on August 26

Published By: Youri Kemp, Nassau Guardian, August 13, 2024

The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and Employers’ Confederation (BCCEC) will launch its Chamber Institute at the end of this month.

BCCEC Executive Director Dr. Leo Rolle told Guardian Business that the Chamber will run its first course, the Certified Business Professional, on August 26.

The course will run for four weeks and Rolle will be lecturing it. The classes will be capped at 25 individuals at $1,250 for non-members, and $1,000 for BCCEC members.

Rolle said: “It’s a certified professional course that allows for either customer service, business etiquette, business management, sales, or communications. I’m starting with customer service and sales, because they are two areas that are very prevalent and meaningful for us. It’s being done in collaboration with the Bahamas Institute of Financial Services, such that we’re using their premises.”

The International Business and Training Association (IBTA), in Fort Lauderdale, will also be recognizing the certifications upon completion of the four-week course.

The Chamber Institute is the training arm of the BCCEC. It gives small business owners access to opportunities for professional development. The institute became dormant after the pandemic, but is being brought back as one of Rolle’s first 100-day achievements since becoming the Chamber’s executive director in May.

Rolle added: “It [Certified Business Professional] will be four-week course, for four hours a week, and then participants will do a certification exam at the end of it, and they will become certified.”

The BCCEC is also preparing to send a delegation to the Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting on October 26 in Apia, Samoa. “We’ll be traveling to Apia in October, where the prime minister and some other members of the government will be presenting at the Business Forum, and we’re carrying some of our members as well,” said Rolle.

He added: “It’s always good when you can connect the business community with international opportunities. One of the things we talk about is foreign direct investment (FDI), and so we are trying to be the bridge between those instances where there are possible investors, as well as the potential for export, and even better, collaboration, if they’re importing. So going to these business forums opens up or provides a platform for our members.

The BCCEC will also work in conjunction with the Royal Caribbean International to host a business brunch on the Utopia of the Seas cruise ship on September 10.

Rolle further noted: “The National Conclave of Chambers of Commerce will be held on October 4 at the Margaritaville Beach Resort, and will unite the BCCEC with the other family island chambers of commerce and their respective members from around the nation, for a day of interactive discussions addressing matters that directly impact the development and expansion of businesses in The Bahamas. Guest speakers will include government leaders, private sector executives, high-ranking public service officials, and prominent international experts. Members of the business community are encouraged to attend.”
